Computer Buddy
A New Computer User
There is a lot to learn about computers. Selkirk Computers has helped many new computer users get started by delivering the computer to their home or office, plugging everything in, testing the computer, printer, monitor, Scanner, word processing software, Internet, email, etc. and finally we sit the customer in front of his / her new computer and show them around their new computer system. This process takes at least two hours. After this much learning the customer is pleasantly tired and satisfied that they have a working new computer. The steepest part of the learning curve has been taken care of and there is lots more to learn.
Introducing the Computer Buddy
What if you live 100 miles from a computer dealer? What if you have a computer techie friend, neighbour or nearby relative who is ready and willing to help you with your new computer? Would you like to be able to pay this person something for helping you get going on your new computer? How about asking this person to be a Computer Buddy? If you buy your computer system from Selkirk Computers we will pay your computer buddy 5% of the purchase price when the computer buddy (CB) has completed the set up of the computer system and tutoring of the customer. When the customer is satisfied the CB is paid his commission by Selkirk Computers.
Who Can Be a Computer Buddy?
Selkirk Computers would like the Computer Buddy to know the following:
- how to plug everything in, power it on and test it. Scan something and print it. Word process something and print it.
- how to install software. Any software. Install any office suite, run the word processor and do simple things like change character size and print something as a test. Install game software and run it. Create a shortcut to the software on the desktop if necessary.
- how to install and change settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, NetScape, NetScape communicator.
- some familiarity with the installed version of Windows. How to set up a dial up or ADSL internet account. Basic hardware installation. For example, with Selkirk Computers phone assistance, the CB should be able to delete the modem from the control panel\system\device manager list, remove the modem from the computer, turn the computer on to run Windows without modem, install a new modem, and finish installing the modem drivers and software. Selkirk Computers would expect to help with a modem replacement by telephone. It will be easier to tell a computer experienced CB how to change a modem than a typical customer.
- this is the important one: the Computer Buddy should be prepared to tutor the customer with patience and knowledge.
Selkirk Computers expects the Computer Buddy to know his customer. This helps the CB tutor the customer better and probably faster. We would expect the CB to help the customer with those "what button do I push to make this happen questions" months after he has received his commission. We would expect a Computer Buddy to make several visits to help the customer. Because the computer buddy lives or works near the customer it should be convenient for him / her to visit the customer to help with a question.
